Year End Reflection

As an annual basis, I decide to reflect on my past experience on Science(Mostly SIA). Firstly, I would thank my Science teachers for their great guidance throughout the year. With Science being one of my weakest subjects, I tend to fall beneath the class. However, my teachers helped me pull my courage towards Science and made me enjoy it more. Definitely they have done a lot in guiding me on Science.
Next, I would like to touch on my examinations. I believed that my results blew me like a solid block. Even though people would feel that 60% is an alright standard for me, I was deeply upset with my results. I actually wanted to do especially well this time but I eventually failed. Despite this fall, I definitely would not give up. I decided to keep working towards my goal and do especially well for the next exam.
I think that's all for me though. Just one more thing: Keep Calm and Work Harder...

Reflection(based on website experience)

Hey, wat's up guys, Today I want to talk about my experience with blogger and how it has got me to express my feelings towards Science online. Honestly, as I said in most posts, I never liked Science as much as most students. But inspiration has made me a wiser and knowledgeable person. So, to make it easier, I'm going to use the 3-2-1 method. So first, 3 things about Science before learning. Honestly, I had difficulties catching up in Science for I was too good in Science. But, I still had little knowledge on what I know about Science. I knew that a diversity is made up of everything, Plants and animals were all part of science and that  everything is real because of Science. 2 things I want to improve in Science: My exams and also improve in my Science logic and knowledge. And 1 other thing i wish to know is that: If something suddenly happens in this world, may it a zombie apocalypse or some 'end of the world' thing, can Science help resolve all of it? This are just some thoughts in my mind, leave a comment on what your thoughts on Science are. Thanks for dropping by.

Separating salt and sand

Hey what is up guys, I recently just did an experiment in school and would like to share it with you. Our teacher gave us 30 minutes and using the apparatus we had, we must separate a salt-sand solution using separation methods. It was quite tough as usual for we had to think of the methods ourselves.
Me and my partner then decided that we can filtrate the salt-sand solution with water and evaporate it afterwards, we can get salt as our final result.

First of, we failed a couple of times, still we did it again but did not had enough time. But at least we
our best. Anyways, we first poured water into the salt-sand solution and stirred the solution. After that, we folded the filter paper into a cone shape and put it in the filter funnel, letting a retort stand hold it. We also put a 250 cm3 beaker below the filter funnel before pouring the solution through the paper. When we were done, the filtrate that we got contains salt and water mixed together. This method is got filtration.
After that, we had to separate the water away from the salt to get salt at the end. So, we poured the filtrate into an evaporating dish and heated it with a bunsen burner. We also put on goggles as particles
would actually come out of the evaporating dish during the process. In the end, our experiment failed for we had accidentally put too much water before the experiment started. But my friends manged to obtain salt, using a limited amount of water in the process. Still, our steps were correct with this separation method known as evaporation. Honestly, this was quite challenging. Reason is that I am not too good at exploring by myself. But as always, failure is the key to success. So I would take this experiment as an experience and master it in the upcoming future. If you would like to leave a comment if you have done something like this before, you can share your experience too. Thanks for taking a look!

Methods of separation mindmap

Hey what is up guys it is....2.39 am in the morning for me right now. Just finished this mindmap on Methods of Separation. I put in alot of effort in it and i hope you like it.

5 Science Facts about me

1. My Primary 1 and 2 science textbook was filled with disgusting bugs.
2. I disliked science the minute i heard about science
3. I got inspiration for science by other teachers(Sorry science teachers)
4. I usually stay up real late just to complete Science.
5. I prefer SIA more than Sci Bio.(Sorry Bio teacher, no hard feelings)

Just for reference, no hard feelings to anyone....

Teacher Mindmap during lessons(Elements, Compounds and Mixtures)

Hey...whad is up guys. I got a picture of my teacher's quick mindmapping on Elements, Compounds and Mixtures. Check it out. Also, to show some support for my teacher, leave a comment. Thanks!

Mindmap on Elements, Compounds and Mixtures

Hey what is up guys, I recently did this mindmap. It is on Elements, Compounds and Mixtures. Please take a look cause i stayed up night to finish it. I would deeply appreciate it if you give me a comment on the mindmap. Thanks!

I hate flowers...until now

Before I start, I would like to say sorry to mother nature for killing so many flowers because of this experiment.
One of the days during a short break from school, I was given an assignment to change a white carnation's petals into 3 different colors. The thought of this experiment made me went back to my primary school examination questions, but I have never done the experiment in real life. To make a long story short, I killed the carnation...:(    It was not bloody or with any food coloring spurting everywhere. Therefore, I went to buy a bouquet of flowers.(Didn't want to buy so many but they only sell it that way.) So, I went back home and tried to do the experiment again. Ended up killing over 4 white roses in one day :((((((((((((((((((((((((.   Finally, i realized that my food coloring was too diluted and that it would take forever for the flower to change in color. Finally, i re-bought the food coloring and tried to do the experiment again. In the end, I was proud to announced that it finally worked. After tons of corrections and many dead flowers(I repeat, I am dead sorry), my flower started to change in color. So in my conclusion, we need to have patience, for mother nature is like us. Each type of things need time to complete. So, if you feel frustrated failing at this experiment countless of times, think again who should be the one frustrated...

Plants: Testing leaves for starch

Just sharing a little from my Sci Bio class, we did a test on starch present in the leaves. We were given the following instructions:
1. Heat half a beaker of water over the Bunsen flame until the water boils.
2. Turn off the Bunsen burner.
3. Put the leaf into the hot water. (This is to make the leaf more permeable by softening it)
4. Put the boiled leaf in a test tube containing some alcohol. Then, place the test tube in the beaker of hot water.(The alcohol would remove the green pigment, chlorophyll from the leaf.)
5.Gently remove the leaf with a pair of forceps then
put it back into the hot water.
6.Remove the leaf and place it in a petri dish. Add a few drops of iodine solution until the leaf is just covered.
7. The leaf should appear blue-black(starch present)

If you see carefully, my leaf did not turn blue-black. Instead, it remained brown. Why? Reason was that the leaf cut from the plant was not fully exposed to the sunlight, which means that the leaf may not have photosynthesized.

Sci Bio, SIA, Physics, Chemistry, Yadiyaidya...

Have you ever wondered the many different type of sciences? Its tiring even by counting the number of them. But yet, have you ever wondered how each everyone of them teaches different stuff? And that altogether, it teaches one whole topic of science. Its like every exterior angle forming 360 degrees. To my thought, i don't exactly enjoy Science. But my SIA teacher said something that gave me a great inspiration. His dream when young was to become a scientist in the future. He keeps working hard on his Science and entered University where he was assigned to the Science experiment department where he gets to examine the different type of cells. Although it wasn't his full dream, it at least played most part of his life. His words hit me, which made me wants to achieve my fullest dream too. So, if you ever had the mindset of Science being very boring or very lame, think again...

Putting Chromatography into action!!!

Remember my previous post about separating the pen ink with chromatography? Well, I did it in an experiment. i was working with my partner on this separation method and it turned out quite fun. We drew a line on the chromatogram and dotted 3 different colours on it. Using the satay stick to hold the chromatogram, we inserted it into a beaker of water without the ink touching the water. Slowly, the ink started to separate into different colours. It was really interesting the realise how each ink colour is invented with!

Separation of Pen Ink?

You guys ever wonder how to separate the mixture of your pen ink? Well, I got the answer with me. Well, the method would be chromatography. Wanna know how?
1. Put a dot of ink around 1/4 of the way up a piece of filter paper.
2. Place the filter paper in a buffer solution but don't submerge the dot of ink.
3. Wait for the buffer solution to get most of the way up the filter paper via absorption
4. Finally, the ink should have separated into different colours that moved different distances up the filter paper.

Comic Strip on methods of separating mixtures

This is a comic strip i made during the holidays with my teammates. It is about Separating mixtures and the methods use to do them. Enjoy!

Acids and Alkali Mindmap

Anyone gets sake and tired when studying for a test? Why don't cut off the slack? Instead of revising notes over and over again, we can do mindmaps! Mindmaps summarise the main points of a chapter. It also helps us to process our mind towards the particular chapter. This helps alot, trust me. This is an example of one i did, it is on Acid and Alkaline.

3d model of Helium atom

Check out this 3D atom model. Me and my partner decided to make 3D design of the Helium atom. People commented that our model was a little too big which I kind of agree. It was a pity that I did not know how to cut the wires(used for electro orbit). Other than that, i felt that the both of us could have made the wires a little smoother before turning it into a circle. Still, my partner and I did our best and we present this! Our 3D helium atom model!

Myself

Hi, My Name is Jacob. I am a student from Canberra Secondary School from Class 1E3. I enjoy using the computer for video games or other programmes related to IT. I also enjoy going out to catch movies with friends and the company of others. This Blog would be to upload interesting facts about Science and other interesting stuff.
